I don't like the idea that he thinks he can tell you exactly what will work in your classroom from start to finish. Just like you, I found out that much of that type of advice flies out the window when students are in your room.&lt;BR/&gt;&lt;BR/&gt;If you haven't already, I'd look into the book Teaching With Love and Logic. I teach in a urban school and it has been the only thing that works for me. It doesn't tell you how many rules to make, it doesn't tell you what to do to start your day. I am learning all about bell ringers, and as far as I can tell,  the only use they have is to give you time to take role.   I don't know shit about teaching-but have you considered a naughty chair?   We have one in our class room, near the teachers desk, not facing anyone.
